I look forward to learning something new from Coach B at <a href="http://www.wholebrainteaching.com/">www.wholebrainteaching.com</a><br>
<br>
During the summer, most Monday nights are open chats. We talk with each other about questions we have, great ideas that come up, and overall enjoy talking with our fellow Whole Brainers (aka Wibbeteers).<br>
<br>
This week we were all pleasantly surprised when Coach showed up and talked with us live for about 15 minutes! He had new stuff to share! If you missed it, too bad so sad! JUST KIDDING! If you missed it... he has already added the mini webcast to the video library!<br>
<br>
Coach B shared information that is new AS OF THIS MORNING! Coach B is always thinking! I for one am so thankful we have access to his continuous feed of information! An important idea in his new book <a href="http://goo.gl/YqsyZ" target="_blank">"Whole Brain Teaching for Challenging Students" </a>is, "The longer we talk, the more students we lose." Coach is always finding new ways to shorten the amount of time we are talking to our students and increasing the time they are talking to each other about what we have taught them. His first new idea he shared tonight is an example of how to keep teacher talk brief!<br>
<br><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">When introducing the Teach-Okay, we had previously asked them to make a full turn to their neighbor. </span>We still want them to make this full body turn. The full body turn helps activate the motor cortex. However, instead of saying, "Using a full body turn, tell your neighbor what I just told you about ___________", we are now going to simplify it by saying "face your neighbor". This will not happen automatically, we will scaffold the process. We will teach them this routine by practicing, "Face your neighbor, face me, face your neighbor, face me,..." All the while reinforcing rule 1: Follow directions quickly!<br>
<br>
As they start to really turn to each other... not just turning their necks... but turning their full body... we will take it to the next step. The next step is to have them BOTH raise their hands when they face each other. Having their hands automatically raised, not only activates their Visual Cortex it will also help them remember that BOTH of them should be using gestures. One is talking and making the gestures while the other is mirroring the gestures. When this process happens, they are activating their mirror neurons. Don't forget by teaching they are speaking (activating their Broca's area) and by listening they are using the Wernicke's Area. <br>
<br>
When we ask them to "face me", we want them to have folded hands. Folded hands in WBT is the listening position. An important principle to WBT teaching is keep it fun. When the kids are facing us we need to be smiling! We want to have the Limbic System engaged! The Limbic System controls our emotions. Teach Okay... is a prime example of why we are WHOLE BRAIN TEACHERS!<br>
<br>
Okay, the above information was great to hear... but Coach had MORE to share! He wanted to tell us how to scaffold ORAL WRITING! OH SWEET MAMA! He was full of great information as always. If you haven't done much with Oral writing please check out <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfpIzUe8ghw" target="_blank">Webcast 502</a>. <br>
<br>
Below are Coach's Steps for scaffolding Oral Writing.<br>
<br>
1) Teach Okay - One person talks and gestures while the other listens and mirrors the gestures. Make sure you switch so that both people have a turn to talk AND listen.<br>
<br>
2) Air Capitalization (beginning of the sentence) and Punctuation<br>
<br>
3) Air Capitalization of Proper Nouns<br>
<br>
4) Bring the words to life (There is that Limbic System connection) Speak with lots of emotion!<br>
<br>
5) Use the Because Clapper<br>
<br>
6) Adder sentences. (We want the students to start giving more than one sentence answers.)<br>
<br>
7) We want to teach the gesture for indenting paragraphs. (This sets them up to be able to speak MULTIPLE paragraph answers!)<br>
<br>
8) Speak with Adjectives. We want the students to use adjectives in their oral writing.<br>
<br>
Coach stopped here tonight... but you know that he will be adding more! <br>
<br>
There is so much more to share but this post is already too long. Stay tuned for more information! <br>

<br>
The energy at the conference for all three days was amazing! Whether teachers were learning about WBT for the first time or coming to refresh their Whole Brain Teaching back pocket of strategies, people were smiling and laughing. We need to bring laughter back to schools.<br>
<br>
I have had the pleasure of meeting Chris Biffle aka Coach B at least five times. I have met Chris Rekstad and Jeff Battle twice. This conference was like a rock star concert for me. As soon as I walked in the doors of the hotel I saw Andrea Schindler... She is the reason I am a Whole Brain Teacher. Her videos are the first I watched. I was able to meet up with my Monday night WBT twin Julie Gustin, aka Southern Teacher. I can't forget to mention finally meeting Kathy Powers aka blizzard and Marty Hohman aka m_hohman.<br>
<br>
I was further star struck when I sat in a meeting with WBT video rockstars, Andre Deshotil, Jasselle Cruz, Sarah Meador, Lindsey Roush, Kate Bowski, and Karly MacAleese. Seeing people like Deb Weigel and Farrah Shipley in person was just unreal.<div>
<br>
Nancy Stoltenberg is a truly beautiful person. She won WBT teacher of the year and without a doubt deserves the title! I couldn't have done all that I have so far without her support. On top of the support and encouragement she has provided, she connected me with my newest friend Marie Everman. Getting to know Marie has been such a blessing.<br>
<br>
I came to Louisiana to learn more about this wonderful miracle that is Whole Brain Teaching. Little did I know that I was going to be a part of the team. From the first meeting, on Sunday night, to working with Andrea on Monday, Tuesday with Chris Rekstad, and finally being able to address the entire conference on Wednesday about my favorite part of WBT ( Super Improver Team): I was part of an elite group of people.<br>
<br>
I met and talked with some amazing people over the course of the last few days. I couldn't possible name all the people who I had the privilege of talking with about Whole Brain Teaching.</div><div><br></div><div>I have moaned and groaned for over a year about the lack of Whole Brain teachers in my school. No more whining (thanks Deb Weigel for the much needed pep talk)! I have a team of teachers across the country ready and waiting to support me all the way. I am going to lead by example, first in my classroom, then my building, then my district... This wildfire will spread!<br>

Question 1: How does the Genius Ladder benefit the writing
process?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“The secret of genius is to carry the spirit of the child
into old age, which means never losing your enthusiasm.” Aldous Huxley</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
The Genius Ladder benefits the
writing process by making writing simple, giving lots of practice with Oral
Writing, and MOST IMPORTANTLY weaving the GOLDEN THREAD of FUN into your daily
instruction. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Writing isn’t only
difficult for our students, we as teachers struggle while teaching this COMPLEX
content area. When students get lots of practice they gain more confidence. Any
time you engage students limbic systems by weaving the GOLDEN THREAD of FUN,
you AND your students win big time! </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
Writing is a difficult subject for
students and teachers. Students struggle with writing because there are so many
BORING, complicated rules to learn. Thanks to Whole Brain Teaching’s HUGE
collection of writing instruction tools, writing is no longer boring or complicated.
Choose from a number of resources under the ebooks section of the Whole Brain
Teaching Website. Genius Ladder is only one of many. There is even an
interactive PDF presentation for the Genius Ladder created by Chris Rekstad, a
co-founder of Whole Brain Teaching. Whole Brain Teaching helps teachers
simplify writing instruction with Super Speed Grammar, The Writing Game, Genius
Ladder, RedGreen Marker Editing and much more. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
Students beg to play the Genius
Ladder. That’s right… students are BEGGING to practice grammar and writing.
They LOVE creating silly sentences. Laughter erupts as the class works to
change a BLAH sentence into a GENIUS paragraph. As the students participate in
this beautifully simple, yet enriching game they not only learn about parts of
speech they increase their vocabulary. They race against the clock to replace
the noun, verb, or adjective in the provided sentences as many times as
possible. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
Weaving the GOLDEN THREAD of FUN,
is a necessity in ANY classroom. If you aren’t weaving the GOLDEN THREAD of FUN…
you aren't in a Whole Brain Classroom. The quote at the beginning of my post makes
an incredible point. Teachers are so bogged down with all the rules and
expectations of data, common core, testing,… that we lose our enthusiasm. We
can’t lose our enthusiasm … we have to lead our students to be genius’. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
For more examples of the Genius
Ladder, watch program 504 on the Whole Brain Teaching Website. You can also
watch Chris Biffle (aka Coach B), cofounder of Whole Brain Teaching play the
Genius Ladder in this video found on youtube (<a href="http://goo.gl/hZWdO">http://goo.gl/hZWdO</a>)
.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Also, watch the AMAZING Jasselle Cruz,
fifth grade teacher, lead her students in an action packed Genius Ladder lesson
complete with disguise cream (http://goo.gl/JiY8O) . </div>

<br />
I made this video for my Jackson, MO friends that are hosting a WBT seminar in Cape Girardeau, Missouri this Saturday. They are talking about my FAVORITE subject the Super Improver Wall! I am unable to join them so I made a video. Here is the best part ... I did the video standing right in front of my Super Improver Wall!<br />
<br />
Please check out my video!<br />

I wouldn't call the conversation I had a Pep Rally... but the collaboration time with a fellow 3rd grade WBT teacher was priceless. I have copied and pasted the conversation here for your information. We did a lot of great brain storming! I hope this helps someone!<br />

AMAZING STUFFI just finished rewatching the Open Chat video from August 21 on
YouTube. Amazing stuff on that video. I am here to give you a run down
on ALL the amazing things that were discussed. I will also provide time
stamps for when the information was discussed... since this was an
informal chat Coach spends a lot of time reading the chat box so things
can get a little slow if you are watching the video for the first time.<br />
<br />
OPEN CHAT = lots of fun quality time with Coach B. This chat was
wonderful BECAUSE Coach was able to share some great new ideas and
answer questions on some old ideas without the stress of staying on
topic! There was wasn't a topic to stick to!<br />
<br />
Coach started by asking about how the Super Improver Wall was going in
our classrooms (1:23)! He reminded us that the Super Improver Wall
should not start until Week two or three of school! Most importantly he
dropped THREE very cool NEW ideas!<br />
<br />
FIRST, Coach suggested having two kinds of stars on the SIW (2:00). The
first star being for any kind of improvement that we see! The second
kind of star, (HOLD ON TO YOUR SEATS!) is for Critical Thinking.
Whenever we see a kid make improvements in providing answers with proof
of Critical Thinking gave them a SPECIAL star. What a great way to
integrate Critical Thinking (welcome Common Core) into EVEN the Super
Improver Wall.<br />
<br />
Here is a BIG reveal! Coach is working on a Super Improver Wall for
POWER POINT (3:17)! Check out the video... he explains it beautifully!<br />
<br />
Now for the reason that I decided to rewatch this video! We now have
Super Improver TEAM (5:55)! Place a box on the Super Improver Wall for
the group. Write a goal that the WHOLE class is working on. Place stars
in the TEAM box when the class is improving on that goal! Keep THAT goal
up for one week. The point in that team goal can become part of a
students points if they need one more point to change levels! Say your
class is working on placing hands in the listening position when you say
Class and they say Yes! If the class earns a point for that on
Wednesday, everyone has temporally earned that point. They can only keep
that point if on FRIDAY they have nine stars... that TEAM point becomes
their tenth star and they can change levels! WOW! Powerful stuff! I can
see students working harder to earn stars if they think they can add
that team point to their card!<br />
<br />
As if new stuff about the Super Improver Wall wasn't enough he gave us
more tools for critical thinking (9:02). He begins by showing us the
mini lessons he has been giving on the Whole Brain Teaching Facebook
page! Lesson 1 on Facebook is "What is Critical Thinking?" The answer on
Facebook is "Critical Thinking is supporting an opinion with lots of
strong evidence." Coach has made that answer better (9:45)! "Critical
Thinking is supporting an IDEA with lots of strong evidence. Idea is a
more generic term."<br />
<br />
Lesson 2 is "What is the Simplest Form of Critical Thinking?" (10:45) "Critical Thinking at its simplest: <u>Teacher Prompt</u>
because ____________," Give the students the idea and the because
prompt... and then ask the students to fill in the blank! He asked us to
give examples of how we can use that teacher prompt! Since the the
night of that program I have asked my students to do this several times!
They are doing better and better EVERY TIME! Here are some examples of
what I prompt the students to answer:<br />
<br />
- We need to follow directions quickly because _______________________.<br />
- Grandma is a noun that can be a proper AND common noun because ___________________.<br />
- We need a zero place holder in this number because ______________________.<br />
- We follow our FOUR MAGIC MOVES in the hallway because _________________________.<br />
<br />
Those are just a FEW examples... I am so impressed with the level of improvement my students have shown!<br />
<br />
Coach took the Critical Thinking Conversation one step further (TOTALLY
NEW INFORMATION!) be telling us the FUNDAMENTAL Skill of Critical
Thinking (15:20). The fundamental skill of Critical Thinking is the
ability to distinguish between weak and strong evidence" He even told us
HOW to TEACH the students to distinguish between weak and strong
evidence (16:55). Just like with other lessons in WBT we need to have
them PRACTICE the wrong way ON PURPOSE! They can't know why the right
way is right if they can't compare it to the right way. Teach your kids
the pitty pat clap (17:18). Example: Rule 1 is good rule (pitty pat: tap
one hand with the pointer finger from the other hand) because it is the
first rule. That is a weak answer. We want to ask our students for
STRONG evidence. Tell them you don't want BABY answers... you want ____
grade answers (insert your grade level in the blank!).<br />
<br />
Here is the big point on the fundamental skill (18:27). "We want kids to
be able to distinguish between strong and weak evidence. If they can't
distinguish between strong and weak evidence they can't support their
ideas."<br />
<br />
He give the IDEAL pattern for kids practicing this skill (19:30). Here
is an example: Rule one is a good rule (pitty pat) because it is the
first rule. This is weak evidence BECAUSE being the first rule doesn't
make it a good rule. When they follow this pattern they are then
reasoning about their reasoning! WOW! Powerful stuff... watch the video
about this... Coach delivers this with his usual vigor!<br />
<br />
The rest of the video is mainly Coach answering questions of the
Wibbeteers that were present for the live audience. Below is a list of
topics covered with the times they are covered!<br />
<br />
Review of the Switch: 30:30<br />
<br />
Pencil Sharpner Problem: 32:37 (He teases about this starting at
31:35... but I am helping you out and getting you to the answer a little
quicker!... Don't tell Coach:)<br />
<br />
Lesson Plan Templates: 35:08<br />
<br />
Location of pre-made Lessons: 37:00<br />
<br />
Purpose of the Three Peat: 39:10<br />
<br />
OH >>>>> You can't miss this... NEW HANDS AND EYES... I
shouldn't tell you where this is... I shouldn't even tell you about
it... but it is too good to keep to myself!<br />
<br />
NEW HANDS AND EYES... are you ready?<br />
<br />
Tell the kids when they repeat the words HANDS AND EYES... they need to
lean forward so that you can tell they are REALLY listening! AMAZING... I
can hear the giggles now... Gotta love that Golden Thread of Fun!<br />
<br />
Ready for a New Oral Writing Idea... Coach was really excited about
this... but I want you to hear it from him... check it out at 49:25 in
the video... you will LOVE IT!<br />
<br />
Mousy voices... NO MORE! 52:38... just simply say "Louder Please" The kid will automatically increase the volume of their voice!<br />
<br />
Example Popper... 53:52<br />
<br />
Can you believe all this great information happened in 57 minutes and 29
seconds... I was amazed too! Don't just take my word for it... watch
the video...<br />

“Nothing is ever achieved without enthusiasm.”-- Ralph Waldo
Emerson</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
Enthusiasm…when both students and
teachers are enthusiastic about education more learning takes place. This is my
belief. Whole Brain Teaching fits this belief perfectly! </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
I am always so excited about the
first day of school… until I have been rambling to my students for over an hour
about expectations.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The necessity of
students learning the expectations is obvious to most of us… but are they
really LEARNING the expectations when we lecture to them? </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
WBT – The First Hour provided the
perfect solution to my first day of school problem. The first hour of MY
personal school day has been running like a video in my head since Tuesday
night. Each time it plays there are small variations! These variations are
making the ONE weakness that I saw in the broadcast non-existent. The weakness
was this: I don’t have a full hour with my students before I have to send them
to music. Now I realize this isn’t a weakness with the ideas from the broadcast…
but with my schedule. I can’t change that schedule, but I can adapt what I
learned to make it work! </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
Setting up the classroom for the
first day can be challenging. Thanks Coach B, for laying out a blueprint for
not only our classroom setup, but also what to write on the board, AND what to
say and WHERE to say it. I am really excited about making a flipchart (from
index cards) for the first day. These cards will serve as cue cards. Most
likely I won’t really have to look at them that day … but will use them as a
way to learn my “lines”. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
Deciding where my students should
sit in the classroom should not take up HOURS of my classroom prep time. I
don’t know my students yet… they are coming to my building for the first time
as third graders. These kids haven’t even walked the halls as Sterling students
yet! I see the power of assigning seats later in the first day. However, I have
to decide if that works for me because of Meet the Teacher night. The night
before school our students and their parents come to the classroom. Most of the
students’ MAIN objective is to see where they will sit. How will they feel if I
assign them a locker that night… but not a seat?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Definitely gives me food for thought.
Students will probably take this news better than parents. Last year I had a
parent upset because I didn’t have the students’ names on their cubbies yet! </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
Setting up the whiteboard for the
first day is an awesome idea. Many of you probably think… is this a new idea
for her? In a way … it is. I always put my name and date on the board and last
year I had the scoreboard. Posting the days’ events on the board, hasn’t been a
strong area for me. Previously, I have used the excuse that I like to roll with
the students. If their interest is peaked by something I run with that. I don’t
want to “not” get to something that was written on the board. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
Here I go … confession time. I
believe this excuse was covering the fact that I was that bleary eyed teacher
in the mirror that Coach referred to in the video. In the video, Coach exclaimed,
“The failure to master simple classroom procedures is one of the greatest failings
of American Education!” That really hit me hard. Too much time is wasted in my
classroom on getting out materials, waiting for everyone to be “ready.” NO
MORE! At the end of last school year, I learned the power of the Three Peat!
Lining up no longer took 2 minutes… it took less than 10 seconds! My class
became pros at getting out their books! Now it is time for this to extend
across all procedures. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
What did I learn about Coach B’s
discussion on the first hour of school? I need to pump up the enthusiasm so
that my students can achieve more this school year. We are going to achieve
everything we set our minds to… and so much more! So… with much enthusiasm and
NO MORE measly excuses… I am looking forward to starting this new school year!

Fourteen <u>DAYS</u> is All it Took to Fall in LOVE... with the Super Improver Wall </div>
<br />
I have had the pleasure of sharing a specific Super Improver Wall story with audiences at two conferences now. At the Union, MO conference only those in the Advanced WBT group heard my story. I also know that I have eluded to my stories in several blog and forum posts... so it is now time to write it all out!<br />
<br />
In this post I am going to lay it all out. So those that have already heard my story will still want to tune in. My story starts with learning about the SIW in Wichita, KS and ends the before the last day of school!<br />

I didn't know that this conference would change my teaching life (and hopefully the lives of my students) so very much. I was able to refresh my little bit of knowledge of WBT, but most importantly... I learned about the Super Improver Wall. Coach B talked about how to set up the wall and how to get the students engaged. I was hooked but still didn't understand the full power!<br />

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012: Back to School... but not my classroom.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
The day I returned to my school I was out of the classroom for collaboration with my grade level. I had decided to start the SIW with only 17 days left of
school! I needed something to keep them on their toes! Our school does a great
job of recognizing students through out the year but the main programs we use were at an end. We work with the Kiwanis Club to recognize monthly TERRIFIC
Kids. (Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly,
Inquisitive, and Caring) We also have Weekly recognition of PAWS students
(Prepared, Arrive on Time, work hard, Stay Focused).<br />

is it good... is it bad. Then I only put up the word rookie (mainly because I
forgot to print the other words on color).<br />

I came close to tears on this day! In addition to starting the
Super Improvers Wall ... I had also recently introduced the Crazy Professor
Reading game! I had been introducing the steps one or two at a time. Today
while playing the kids were REALLY enjoying the Q&A part. I had just turned
away from them to look at the SIW when I heard a voice I didn't recognize.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I
swiveled around and saw one of my quiet little girls nearly jumping up and down
grinning ear to ear as she asked a WONDERFUL higher level thinking question
with a DRAMATIC voice and AWESOME gestures. At first I was speechless! I
quickly recovered and called "Class Class" They nearly suffered
whiplash in there eagerness to comply! That also threw me off! I said
"Class I am so excited our THIRD super improver sticker for the day is
AWESOME. This student is usually very quiet and I have to REALLY lean in to
hear her." I described what I had seen... and she starts smiling. When I
call her name you would have thought I had just crowned her Miss America. At
that moment I truly saw the value of the SIW ... this little girl had been
hiding in the shadows. When I pulled her out she SPARKLED! Her effort the rest
of the day blew me away... she earned herself another sticker... I would have
given her more but I didn't want to over do it on our first SIW day!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal">
The next sticker awarded went to this little girls Crazy
Professor game partner. I started by saying that at first I thought this
person's enthusiasm was a direct result of our last Super Improver. (Before I
could say anything ... the little girl started jumping up and down tapping her
partner saying... "she is talking about you... you are a super improver...
isn't it wonderful!" I am already tearing up again. What a moment!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
Friday, May 4th - Wheels started turning<br />
<br />
I was getting really excited about the success of the Super Improver Wall in my class room! There was ONE student I hadn't reached yet. He wasn't in the room all the time. This friend... his name will be Max for the purpose of this blog. Max is a student with Autism. Every time he entered my room from a special class he would wander around make distracting sounds, lay on others desks, and talk to his buddies. You could sometimes see the frustration on the faces of my students when he walked in the room.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
I was in the middle of a math lesson when Max walked in. He started to wander but his eyes caught the Super Improver Wall. He was frozen. He stared at the board for awhile, then he blurted out... "What is that?" My students and I explained this to him and he silently went back to his seat. WOW! You could tell his mind was working.<br />
<br />
Monday, May 7th - WOW!<br />
<br />
Same time as yesterday, Max comes into the classroom. You can see him start to wander... but he stops again looks at the board and goes DIRECTLY TO HIS SEAT! I am shocked. The students looked at me and back at Max. I was so overcome I almost went on with my lesson. My kids started waving their hands like crazy. They saw I wasn't reacting to their hands so a couple blurted out ... doesn't Max deserve a star? So of course, he got it and was so proud! The Super Improver Wall had hooked this kiddo!<br />
<br />
FAST FORWARD: Things are going swimmingly! Stars are flying!<br />
<br />
Monday, May 14th - SO MUCH IN ONE DAY!<br />
<br />
I decided that I would introduce the Genius Ladder today... no big deal right...nine days left of school. Oh yeah, today is also dress rehearsal for the third grade music program taking place TONIGHT!<br />
<br />
(For more about my Genius Ladder Lesson read my previous posts)<br />

<br />
Below is an a part of a previous blog ... but it is related to the Super Improver Story:<br />
<br />
[ As we were reviewing, Max back to the classroom
from his special class. Max sometimes has trouble transitioning.
He will often cause a disruption in class. When he entered this time he
knew he couldn't disrupt because we were doing gestures. He was watching
and hadn't yet started to color his Pokemon pictures. Just as he was
about to grab for the coloring page... I asked for volunteers to lead
the class in the lesson for a noun. He was interested. One of my girls
came up and did an EXCELLENT job for reteaching "What is a noun?" I
asked for another WBT leader.<br />
<br />
Max raised his hand. I hesitated.
Often when I call on Max, he takes the opportunity to make his
classmates laugh. I sensed something different this time, so I asked
him, "Do you know what I am asking you to do if you come up here?" He
said, "YES! You want me to lead the class in "What is a noun?" I was
impressed and let him come to the front.<br />
<br />
He immediately said "Class". My
kids giggled and then responded "YES". "Mirrors"... more giggling
"Mirrors". He paused looked at me and I nodded. Then he did the WHOLE
THING. "What is a noun? A noun is a person, a place or a thing" The kids
mirror but some were making the gesture for "idea". In my classroom we
added to the definition of a noun. We say "A noun is a person, a place, a
thing, or an idea" Max had not been in the room when I taught
the added part. He said "I didn't ask for that gesture" I stepped in to
inform him what they were doing and he said "Oh, Okay! Mirrors ... and
an idea" Then he sat down. There was a 15-20 second pause and then my
whole class erupted in applause. They were so proud of their classmate.<br />
<br />
I
was moved to tears. Most of the kids saw this! I tried to move on to
review Sentences but my kids hands went in the air like crazy. They all
wanted to know why I hadn't given Max a SUPER IMPROVER sticker. They
were right... and they were SO PROUD OF HIM! I was proud of them. I
gave him his star and we all gave him a "37 finger WOO" ... This was Max's idea! I was able to move on and I still had his attention. I
asked for a Whole Brain Leader for Sentence. He raised his hand. Usually
when he raises his hand he will start calling out my name if he thinks I
am ignoring him. This time he sat with his hand PATIENTLY raised. I was
tempted to call on him ... but I wanted to give others a chance. He
handled this beautifully. He mirrored the other Student Leaders. When it
was time to line up for Art, he didn't complain that I had not called
on him. Instead he went to a classmate that had been called on and said
"Hey Andrew, you did a really good job with your gestures" I was
floored... not only had he participated, waited patiently and showed his
comprehension of noun and sentence, he had also noticed another students
success!]<br />
<br />
Max decided that he didn't like the second color on the SIW wall blue... he wanted it green. So since I wasn't attached to my colors yet... I rearranged! <br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
That night as the students were coming to my room for the music program I was able to share the SIW wall with several parents. A lot of
parents were able to see the SUPER IMPROVER WALL! This was magic. I got to hear
the kids explain the Wall to their parents. Even the kids with just one star
explained the wall with pride. I just LOVE this! I am still in absolute
wonderment that kids are working SO hard for stickers on a piece of paper...
but at the same time I can see that they are NOT just stickers and papers to
them... they are trophies that they will hold in their heart! WOW!</div>
<br />
May 23rd - Day before last day of school<br />
<br />
Wow! I wasn't ready for this! The last weeks of school had been so smooth thanks to the SUPER IMPROVER WALL. The day was a perfectly normal school day... we held instruction just as we had the last three weeks! (Last day was a planned celebration). I was feeling bummed because all my kids had come close to 10 stars but hadn't done it yet. It happened someone reached the GREEN level... notice I say green and not Phenom. You guessed it! Max was my ONLY student to reach the phenom level... and he was so proud of himself. Thus the reason my Phenom level will probably ALWAYS be Green! <br />

into it.” Ernest Holmes (American author and founder of the Religious
Science Movement 1887 - 1960)<br />
<br />
Today was a great day at the conference in Union, MO! I look forward to
sharing more of my experience but I just have to share the NEW WBT
mirror that I learned. Many of you know "Mirrors" and some even know
"Mirror Words", but have you heard of the other two variations? <br />
<br />
First for those of you unfamiliar with WBT mirrors... I will catch you
up! Mirrors is one of the CORE 4 of Whole Brain Teaching (Class/Yes,
Scoreboard, Teach/Okay, and Mirrors). Mirrors is a great way for you to
see which of your students are engaged. You can take one quick look at
your class while using mirrors and see the engagement level. <br />
<br />
Mirrors: While teaching a gesture for a new topic you may want the kids
to practice before releasing them into the Teach/Okay. Say "Mirrors" and
the hold you two hands palms out, your students will repeat and do the
same. As you gesture your students are mirroring your gestures. You can
even do a Mirrors check and move you hands all around checking to be
sure all classroom mirrors are working. <br />
<br />
Mirror with words: Mirror words is the next step. This time as you say
mirror words bring up you right hand as you did before, but bring your
left hand to your mouth and then draw it away as if you were pulling a
string of gum from your mouth. This time as you speak your voice takes
on a cadence. Speak fewer words at a time because the kids are not only
mirroring your gestures but parroting your words. You speak and gesture
first they follow. <br />
<br />
ARE YOU READY FOR THE NEW FORMS OF MIRROR? Good thing you are just
reading this or I might make you BEG! Warning: Keep in mind that it is a
LONG YEAR. Keep the next two variations in your BIG back pocket for as
long as possible! <br />
<br />
MAGIC MIRRORS: In this variation, the creativity lands with the
students. You say magic mirrors and hold your hand up like with regular
mirrors but waggle your fingers. Then YOU drop your hands and begin
speaking. YOU do not gesture... the students create their own gestures
to go with your words! AMAZING!<br />
<br />
Mirror Ventriloquist: This is great for those SQUIRRELS in your
classroom that like to have attention! Call one of these angels up to
the front of the room with you. Stand behind them and you speak while
the student acts as the ... ummmm... we'll say puppet. You are speaking
and the student facing the class creates the gestures! SO MUCH FUN! I
was able to experience this first hand today because I was Coach B's...
um... puppet! <br />

I started this forum post with the quote by Ernest Holmes. "Life is a
mirror and will reflect back to the thinker what he thinks into it.”
This quote is a great thought to go with the third and fourth mirror
variations. When you give the students the opportunity to create their
own gestures to YOUR words they are making more personal connections to
the content being taught!daisydee226http://www.blogger.com/profile/18196085899723415202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2419293349289242255.post-28174759348981758272012-06-18T11:02:00.003-07:002012-06-18T11:14:36.589-07:00Liebster Blog<h3 class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name">

I haven't forgotten you! I have been very busy this week taking a graduate class. I am taking a three credit hour graduate class that only lasts two weeks so you can imagine how much work there is. As part of that class we have to blog daily about our assignments. I thought you might be interested in what I am doing. Feel free to take a peek at my <a href="http://www.warrensburgr6.org/education/components/board/default.php?sectiondetailid=40687" target="_blank">PAWSitive Project Engagement Blog</a>. <br />

I will return soon with more WBT blogs.daisydee226http://www.blogger.com/profile/18196085899723415202noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2419293349289242255.post-65985376205652347072012-06-03T20:40:00.001-07:002012-06-18T11:12:53.395-07:00QuotationsI have loved collecting quotations since I was a middle school student. Quotations can be found throughout my diaries, on notes taken in my MANY classes and conferences, file folders at school and at home. I even have couple of quotation books that I use for scrapbooking inspiration.<br />
<br />
Recently, Chris Biffle has been encouraging people seeking Whole Brain Teaching certification to include quotations in our reflections. I have been mulling this over and seeking out my many lists of quotations. Revisiting some of these wonderful quotes has truly been a fun experience. As I was reviewing these quotes, I came across one that made me think of an experience I had with my students this year. I just had to share it!<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">"Much education today is monumentally
ineffective. All too often we are giving young people cut flowers when we
should be teaching them to grow their own plants." ~John W. Gardner<u><span style="color: blue;"></span></u></span></div>
<br />
In the past, as a fifth grade teacher I have not done a Mother's Day project. I have allowed my students time to write poems, cards or letters. As Mother's Day approached this year (my first as a third grade teacher), I realized that I was going to need to set aside time for the students to do something for the women (or in some cases the men that have been like moms) in their lives. I really left this planning to the last minute. SO, on the eve of the Friday before Mother's Day I was frantically searching the web. I finally realized that most ideas (especially the ones found on Pinterest) would take a lot more preparation time than I had available.<br />
<br />
I was stumped! I looked out my front window and in the twilight saw the flowers I had planted with my husband. Now those that know me ... know that I am NOT a plant person. I tend to forget about plants and only remember them when they are shriveled up! My grandma is a PRO with flowers and my mom also enjoys flowers. I realized that the kids would want to DO something for their mom's not just color a template and cut it out.<br />
<br />
Early Friday morning I drove to Wal*Mart and bought two flats of some type of annual flower (I can't even remember what they were), potting soil, plastic spoons (aka mini shovels), and some BLUE solo cups. I also bought three packages of permanent markers and SEVERAL bags of foam stickers. The previous night I had also printed out some tags that said "Planted by ___________ for __________________". We were going to put these on popsicle sticks to put in the cup with the flower.<br />
<br />
As soon as the students entered the room and saw the flowers the excitement level raised SEVERAL notches. I couldn't believe how excited they were. "Do we get to plant the flowers?" "Oh! I have never planted a flower before!" "Is she really going to let us plant them or is she going to do it while we are in music?" Wow, just the sight of these flowers had them talking!<br />
<br />
I kept hearing these thoughts, worries, and questions throughout the day. Finally, before going to music we started decorating the blue cups. I, of course, had to lay down the rules for the markers and tell them how many foam stickers they could each have. They took these directions and rules and RAN with them. I couldn't believe how creative they got with so few supplies. <br />
<br />
When they returned from Music, the planting began! I gave a short lesson on how to plant the flower. I had them repeat the steps and teach them to their shoulder partners. Everything was going great. Toward the end a little girl came up to me with a HUGE smile and said my flower is planted! Bless her heart... she had put potting soil in her cup and then just placed the flower in the cup. She hadn't dug a hole or anything. At that moment I realized something as "simple" as having the kids plant flowers was so powerful. So many of today's kids don't have the experiences that I grew up with.<br />
<br />
In an age when we are being encouraged to do MORE and MORE technology based instruction... we cannot forget to do the hands on things. This past year my students have enjoyed just a few of these: planting a flower, making a bagel bird feeder, filling a bird feeder, finger weaving, making hand made cards and poppies for veterans.<br />
<br />
So let me just encourage to avoid handing your students cut flowers, let kids grow their own plants!<br />

<br />
If you are reading this blog make sure you read the previous blog to get some background information.<br />
<br />
When my students returned from Art and PE, the camera was set up and our Literacy Coach was there ready to watch the lesson!<br />
<br />
I called the students one row at a time to the carpet in front of the Genius Ladder board. When I called them to the carpet, they replied "Carpet, Carpet, Carpet". (I love the three-peat procedures!) They were ALL smiles as we got started! They wanted to know what the Genius ladder was all about.<br />
<br />
I rubbed my hands together and said, "It is finally time to learn about the Genius Ladder. Tell your neighbor how excited you are to learn about the Genius Ladder." They went wild! I could tell they were really excited. CLASS CLASS! YES YES! Wow, did I have their attention.<br />
<br />
I asked the question, "What is the Genius Ladder?" I had them ask each other and called them back. "The Genius Ladder is a fun game that we are going to use to become better writers!"<br />
The Genius Ladder (pretend to climb a ladder)<br />
is a fun game (pretend to move a game piece on an imaginary board)<br />
That we are going to use (we used a gesture that we had created for the vocab word community)<br />
to become better writers. (write on imaginary board/paper)<br />
<br />
I had them mirror this statement, and used mirror words.<br />
<br />
"The first step of the Genius Ladder is the BLAH Sentence. (make a face and make the sentence gesture)<br />
Teach - Okay<br />
Class - Yes<br />
"Our blah sentence is: The students sing"<br />
"Is this a sentence?" (They replied no to this... which was perfect because we reviewed what a sentence is)<br />
<br />
<br />
I won't go into too much detail here because I hope to post the video very soon!<br />
<br />
After reviewing sentence, noun and verb. I introduced the second step of the genius ladder.<br />
<br />
"The second step of the Genius Ladder is the SPICY SENTENCE"<br />
"What is a Spicy Sentence?" Teach-Okay Class - Yes<br />
"What is a Spicy Sentence? A spicy sentence is a BLAH sentence PLUS an adjective!"<br />
A spicy sentence (wave hand near mouth like you have eaten something spicy then make sentence gesture)<br />
is a blah sentence (gesture above)<br />
Plus (make a plus sign with pointer fingers)<br />
an adjective ( I made the gesture for adjective... but my kids didn't know it yet!)<br />
<br />
"Oh NO! We haven't learned the gesture for adjective yet. Tell your partner I REALLY want to know the gesture for an adjective"<br />
<br />
We learned the gesture for adjective and continued learning about spicy sentences. We practiced adding different adjectives to our Blah Sentence. When we were finished I sent them to their seats to write as many different spicy sentence with our sentence frame "The ______________ students sing." I told them they only had four minutes. They did an amazing job. In four minutes I had a paper that assessed not only understanding of adjectives but sentences as well!<br />
<br />
I was in Teacher Heaven and my Literacy Coach LOVED it. She really liked the pace of the lesson and felt that the kids were engaged and really learned! WAHOO!<br />
<br />
Thanks for Reading... and STAY "PAWSitive"daisydee226http://www.blogger.com/profile/18196085899723415202noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2419293349289242255.post-81819255359307845372012-05-16T22:14:00.001-07:002012-05-20T18:32:32.536-07:00Leading to the Genius LadderI know in my last post I promised that I would talk about Mind Soccer and the Crazy Professor Reading Game... but I have decided to head another direction.<br />
<br />
With eight days left of the school year, I decided to introduce my students to the Genius Ladder. I presented this lesson to my students on Monday. I spent a good chunk of Sunday afternoon and evening preparing for this lesson. I set up the Genius Ladder board in my classroom and created a script to go from to keep me on track. I didn't want to miss anything. I wanted to make sure to include all the steps of the 5 step lesson template.<br />
<br />
My class hasn't been using power pix all year, so in order to introduce the Genius Ladder I had to review some power pix and introduce others. As I created the script I realized that I didn't want the objective of the lesson to be about the Genius Ladder specifically. My kids had been struggling remembering what an adjective is so that become my main objective. I would take the question "What is an adjective?" through all five steps of the lesson template. I didn't want the lesson to be too long, however I knew that I had a lot to cover. So my plan was to introduce the first to steps of the genius ladder and teach "adjective" PLUS review other concepts in 25 minutes (this was not to include the students doing the Critical Thinking Piece). I knew that I couldn't talk for 25 minutes... so I planned very carefully Teach-Okay breaks through-out the lesson.<br />
<br />
I invited our literacy coach to see the lesson because I wanted her to see the academic side of whole brain teaching. She had commented several times on the classroom management that she had seen in my room. I knew she would LOVE the writing concepts I was introducing! I wasn't sure when the morning started WHEN I would be teaching the lesson because I had asked the literacy coach when she could see the lesson. I found out near the beginning of the day that she could come in at 2:45. This worked to my GREAT advantage!<br />
<br />
Below is an account of how many day progressed. <br />
Monday MORNING: Today is the day of the third grade spring music program, BUGZ. That means that our morning started with program rehearsal. I knew my kids would be BUZZING with excitement about the program. However, something else soon had them BUZZING. I had set up the Genius Ladder Sunday evening and had even taken the opportunity to make a more presentable scoreboard using colored masking tape. The kids were immediately drawn to the board. They were excited and asking questions. I was shrugging them off and saying "You'll see!" This drove them CRAZY. In addition to the genius ladder and new score board... there was also a piece of construction paper on the board CLEARLY covering SOMETHING! They just HAD to know what was under the paper. (I decided to write my chart of adjective / noun pairs on the board ahead of time so that I didn't have to waste lesson time.)<br />
<br />
We had a productive rehearsal and we had a long day ahead of us before we could learn about the genius board. Not to mention... excitement was building for tomorrows field trip. This day could have easily been a terrible day with all this excitement... but no... they were to concerned about getting smilies and SUPER IMPROVER STARS to let a little excitement ruin our day!<br />
<br />
After lunch we did a quick review of the noun and sentence power pix. I openly admit that I did this because I would be VIDEOING the lesson later and I didn't want the kids to go BLANK when I asked them to REVIEW THESE CONCEPTS!<br />
<br />
As we were reviewing, one of our friends came back to the classroom from his special class. Our friend sometimes has trouble transitioning. He will often cause a disruption in class. When he entered this time he knew he couldn't disrupt because we were doing gestures. He was watching and hadn't yet started to color his Pokemon pictures. Just as he was about to grab for the coloring page... I asked for volunteers to lead the class in the lesson for a noun. He was interested. One of my girls came up and did an EXCELLENT job for reteaching "What is a noun?" I asked for another WBT leader. My friend raised his hand. I hesitated. Often when I call on this friend he takes the opportunity to make his classmates laugh. I sensed something different this time, so I asked him, "Do you know what I am asking you to do if you come up here?" He said, "YES! You want me to lead the class in "What is a noun?" I was impressed and let him come to the front. He immediately said "Class". My kids giggled and then responded "YES". "Mirrors"... more giggling "Mirrors". He paused looked at me and nodded. Then he did the WHOLE THING. "What is a noun? A noun is a person, a place or a thing" The kids mirror but some was making the gesture for "idea". In my classroom we added to the definition of a noun. We say "A noun is a person, a place, a thing, or an idea" Our friend had not been in the room when I taught the added part.He said "I didn't ask for that gesture" I stepped in to inform him what they were doing and he said "Oh, Okay! Mirrors ... and an idea" Then he sat down. There was a 15-20 second pause and then my whole class erupted in applause. They were so proud of their classmate.<br />
<br />
I was moved to tears. Most of the kids saw this! I tried to move on to review Sentences but my kids hands went in the air like crazy. They all wanted to know why I hadn't given Michael a SUPER IMPROVER sticker. They were right... and they were SO PROUD OF HIM! I was proud of them. I gave him his star and we all gave him a "37 finger WOO" ... This was our friend's idea! I was able to move on and I still had his attention. I asked for a Whole Brain Leader for Sentence. He raised his hand. Usually when he raises his hand he will start calling out my name if he thinks I am ignoring him. This time he sat with his hand PATIENTLY raised. I was tempted to call on him ... but I wanted to give others a chance. He handled this beautifully. He mirrored the other Student Leaders. When it was time to line up for Art, he didn't complain that I had not called on him. Instead he went to a classmate that had been called on and said "Hey A_____, you did a really good job with your gestures" I was floored... not only had he participated, waited patiently and show his comprehension of noun and sentence he had also noticed another students success!<br />
<br />
This BLOG is already TOO long so, I will continue this blog this weekend to tell you how my Genius Lesson went. I can't wait to tell you more!<br />

I mentioned in my first blog that I went to another Whole
Brain Teaching conference. The Para in my classroom joined me at the one day
conference in Wichita. He had been interested in the bits of WBT that he had
seen in my classroom and wanted to see more! Neither of us was disappointed. I
was refreshed hearing some of the information again. Some of the information I
had forgotten... but it made so much sense after using the BIG SEVEN all year
long!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I have been like a TEACHER ON FIRE! I keep asking myself...
why wasn't I doing more this year. I had really just been dabbling in whole
brain teaching. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When we returned from Wichita I was actually out of the
classroom for another day (Spring caught up with me... gotta love allergies).
HOWEVER, my Para had really amped up our rules practice. He had them sit on the
floor and review the rules! Apparently they had a blast with this! When I
returned they were so excited to tell me about the rules practice. PLUS, they
had started recording their records for different 3 peats. LINES, BOOKS, ...
they couldn't wait to see if they could break their records! </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I was reminded of the FIVE STEP WBT LESSON TEMPLATE. Oh how
could I have forgotten about the YES - NO WAY test? My kids LOVE this... and I
can see what EVERYONE knows! </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
For those of you unfamiliar or new to WHOLE BRAIN
TEACHING... Here is a quick layout of the five steps: </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Step 1 Question: Ask a question (For example: What is a
noun?)</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

Step 2 Answer: Give the answer to the question (maybe even
introduce the Power Pix if there is one) with a gesture. </div>

Step 3 Expand: Expand the answer with examples. A table is a
noun BECAUSE it is a thing. A teacher is a noun BECAUSE it is a person. A
classroom is a noun BECAUSE it is a place. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
(I was also reminded at the conference about the BECAUSE
gesture. This is wonderful for reinforcing the point) </div>

Step 4 Test: Test for Comprehension: I have been mainly
using the YES-NO WAY </div>

I ask a question like... Is a pencil a noun? Students pump
their fist and say YES!</div>

Is running a noun? Student point to forehead with both hands
and push them out and so NO WAY... as if they can't BELIEVE that I would think
running is a noun. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Step 5 Critical
Thinking: Truthfully because of the craziness of the last weeks of school I
have only had time for mini lessons here and there... so I haven't been all out
on the Critical thinking. But whenever I can remind them of what we have
learned and encourage them to use the information in the letters they are
writing to their parents and to next years first graders I have been doing it! </div>

I have always been shy about putting my thoughts out there... but I can't resist any longer. I have become BEYOND curious, BEYOND enthusiastic, BEYOND inspired, and BEYOND ... BEYOND about WHOLE BRAIN TEACHING. Last summer, while frantically looking up third grade information (I was going to be switching from 5th to 3rd grade) I stumbled upon Proteacher.com. I knew that I wanted a new approach to management in my classroom. I had been following the BIST program/philosophy since my first year of teaching. I LOVED (still do) BIST. (www.bist.org) I wanted something more! I kept seeing references to WBT and the five rules. (I couldn't believe people would actually post such a daring and direct rule(Keep your Dear Teacher Happy). This rule made sense. I wanted these rules. Could this mysterious WBT be what I was looking for? Simple answer... YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<br />
<br />
I found more posts on proteacher about WBT... I finally found their website and videos.... WHOA! I found out they would be IN MISSOURI! "Only" a four hour drive and I would be getting FREE training for this unique approach. I signed up for the conference with our school's new art teacher. (That was another blessing that WBT brought me). I fell in love with WBT at this conference. I wanted school to start RIGHT AWAY! I was going to use it ALL... I was going to be a pro...!<br />
<br />
Then the reality of teaching a new grade level sunk in! I introduced the Big Seven on the first day of school. They kids LOVED it. I was amazed by the reaction I got from the kids. That was as far as I got! However, my school year has been successful.<br />
<br />
When I started looking ahead to next year (I wouldn't be new to third grade anymore!) ... I started getting fired up about WBT again. I tried Mind Soccer... I had been stubbornly avoiding it all year. I went to a WBT conference in Wichita (another four hour drive away). This time I went with a newly graduated educator (and a para in my classroom). We got fired up together. We were ready to bring our WBT "A" game to the classroom. AND WE DID!<br />
<br />
In the last 15 days of school WE have:<br />
- successfully implemented the Super Improvers Wall.<br />
- started a power pix wall<br />
- become an expert and variations of a ten finger WOO!<br />
- given ourselves the most enjoyable end of school time that I have experienced in my nine years of teaching.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned for more journals from my trips to TEACHER HEAVEN! <br />
